As part of a wider Thompsons Group project, the solar team was approached to design a solar array as part of the refurbishment of The Glass Tower Hotel, formerly The Royal Carleton. The solar installation was completed in two stages working alongside other on-site trades. Being located in an exposed seafront location on the famous Blackpool promenade, there were several challenges to navigate to deliver the project – from access constraints meaning materials were delivered to the roof using a crane, to overcoming the elements.

Installation
To make best use of the space available, a flat roof east west system was designed over the main and lower roof areas. This was designed in conjunction with the manufacturer to ensure correct loadings and placement. Consisting of 68 x 455W solar panels, the array was installed using a ballasted flat roof system.
Grid consent was sought and approved to connect the system under G99 regulations, connected via a SolarEdge inverter.

Completion Commissioning, Performance
Now fully commissioned and tested, the installation has been registered with the national grid and is providing clean, renewable energy to the property. Remote monitoring also enables the system to be monitored to ensure it is performing correctly over the lifetime of the installation.
