Prior to any installation, it should first be considered what consent & notification may be required. This will be assessed during the design stage and any relevant consents and notifications made.

Grid Connection

Grid Connection

Installation below 3.68kW single phase or 11.04kW three phase can be connected and post notified under G98 requirement. However, for installations exceeding these capacities, or where generation is already present on site, aG99 application must be submitted to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) prior to installation. The application will advise the DNO of what and how we propose to connect so that they can assess if this will have an impact on the wider network. During this application, we will provide them with technical data about the equipment we propose to install and where relevant, discuss options for alternative equipment that will be suit the connection point.

Whilst we will work with the DNO to get the best possible connection offer, in some instances upgrade work may be required with additional charges applicable. Alternatively we will work with the DNO to amend the system to fit without additional charge. We will keep you informed through the process and discuss options proposed by the DNO until we reach the best solution.

Once the installation is complete, we will issue a post-notification to the DNO advising of the connection and providing as-built drawings for their records. The system will then be registered and a small scale embedded generation (SSEG) number issued.

Planning Permission

Planning Permission

In most instances planning permission isn’t required for building mounted solar both commercial or domestic. However, there are exceptions to this including if the property is a listed building or located within a conservation area. In these instances advice should be sought from your local planning authority (LPA) to confirm if permission is required.

If the installation doesn’t require full planning permission, although not a requirement, you may wish to obtain a permitted development certificate. This is a certificate from the LPA confirming that the system falls under permitted development.

For ground mounted solar over 9m2, full planning permission is required. This involves the submission of plans, design details and application to the LPA to request permission. Depending upon the size of system and LPA, requirements may vary.

More information about planning requirements can be found on the planning portal.

MCS Registration

Thompsons are an MCS Certified solar and storage installation company. For installations below 50kW, your installation will be registered with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and a certificate issued. This is confirmation that your installation has been designed and installed in compliance with the scheme.
