A rural livery, Sough Pits Farm has a high energy usage which is partially covered by power generated by their existing small scale wind turbine. Project Overview
As a company already invested in renewable energy, Sough Pits Farm asked Thompsons Solar to design a system that would incorporate their existing on-site renewables, add additional generation and provide storage for excess power generated. A rural livery, Sough Pits Farm has a high energy usage which is partially covered by power generated by their existing small scale wind turbine. The addition of the solar and storage has vastly improved energy autonomy and further reduced their energy bills.
Installation
Following an application to the grid, a system was agreed that would complement the existing generation and provide additional generation and storage whilst limiting export to the grid. In addition to the existing 11kW wind turbine, 80 panels were installed providing an extra 42.4kW solar generation capacity on site. The array was installed using a 30kW inverter and suitable roof mounting system.
In addition to solar, 85.2kWh of storage was added allowing the company the store more of the energy generated and further reduce grid-sourced power.

Completion Commissioning, Performance
The system was commissioned in May 2025 and the business is already seeing huge reductions on their electricity bills. Remote monitoring enables the system to be monitored to ensure it is performing correctly over the lifetime of the installation.
The system is predicted to payback in just over 6 years which equates to just under a 19% ROI. In addition to the financial aspect, the business has significantly reduced their carbon emissions.
