The Challenge: An Old, Run-Down Manor Farmhouse and Barn
When the team first set eyes on the old farmhouse and barn, we knew we had our work cut out. Both buildings were in a state of complete disrepair, with unstable structures, rotting timber, and collapsed joists. It was clear that the property hadn’t been maintained for years, and it would take a lot of hard work to bring it back to life.
We identified that the gable wall of the barn needed to be removed entirely and rebuilt using a steel frame. This would ensure it was structurally safe. The roof would also need to be underpinned. These were just one of many complex issues that we had to tackle to get the project off the ground.
As we began to work, we encountered more challenges than we initially anticipated. We uncovered collapsed drains and an inadequate electrical supply that would need to be resolved before we could even begin thinking about the cosmetic touches that would make the space perfect for its intended use.
The Solution: An Extensive Refurbishment
Being the Principal Contractor Thompsons worked closely with the client, Nelson Hotels & Inns but were also involved with many key contractors including the local council, architects, structural engineers, and interior designers.
A key feature of the renovation was the construction of a brand-new kitchen, linking the barn and farmhouse together. Being in a central location this allowed easy access for catering staff to prepare and serve food to guests in both the restaurant and barn.
Thompsons also installed the beautiful bespoke staircase designed by Tibbatts Abel. The staircase not only provides functionality, but also adds to the overall aesthetic of the space.
But perhaps the most breath-taking addition to the space was the incredible orangery. This beautiful glass-enclosed space allowed for natural light to flood into the venue, while also providing a stunning view of the surrounding countryside.
The Result: A Beautiful Restaurant and Wedding Venue
The refurbishment of the old manor farmhouse and barn has transformed it into a stunning restaurant and dream wedding venue. The once dilapidated structure has been given a new lease on life, and its grandeur and history have been elevated to create a warm, contemporary, and welcoming space.
Inside, Tibbatts Abel were the interior designers briefed to create the space into a spectacular contemporary, and inviting venue.
Retaining some of the historical features throughout such as the brick walls, original timber beams, and stone walls whilst also giving it a modern twist by adding plush fabrics, bold wallpapers, quirky tiles, and a zinc bar top. Thompsons ensured the bespoke interiors were built and installed to the exact specifications.
Thanks to the extensive refurbishment, the old Manor Farmhouse, and Barn now boasts a beautiful venue that offers guests an unforgettable dining experience with its stunning features and breath-taking ambiance, it has become a premier restaurant and wedding venue.
