Thompsons Solar were approached by the owner of Paddock Farm to provide a suitable solution to tackle their high energy demand. We designed a system which would provide this domestic property a hybrid solution consisting of both onsite generation and storage encompassing existing wind and hydro systems. The system will enable them to take control of their energy costs and benefit from a low carbon source of power.
With existing on-site generation, consideration was given to the impact the additional system would have on the grid and how it would be evenly distributed over the three-phase supply.

An application was submitted and permission granted to connect the additional system with an export limitation agreed.
Installation
Paddock Farm has a number of out buildings which enabled installation of a south-west facing solar PV array. The total installed capacity is 14.7kW with 28.4kWh of storage.
During the design phase, allowance was made for the array to be installed around sky lights to ensure light into the building wasn’t compromised. Space available allowed installation of 36 solar panels connected to a hybrid inverter linked to a solar battery storage system.
The installation of storage allows surplus generated power on site to be utilized rather than being exported to the grid. This allows the client to have greater self-sufficiency in terms of energy.

Completion, Commissioning and Performance
The system was commissioned and tested and is now fully operational. Remote monitoring enables the system to be monitored to ensure it is performing correctly over the lifetime of the installation. The system provides data for the client to see how much power is being generated, consumed, stored and exported in real-time.
ROI on this investment is almost 14% with a proposed payback of 8 years.
